The gate of the Yale Chemistry Research building is adorned with a model beloved of physicists and chemists who study phase transitions: the Ising model. In 1944, Nobel-prize winning Yale professor Lars Onsager solved the two-dimensional Ising model in a show of mathematical tour de force.
