Sampling the flavour of the QGP

Abstract: The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at BNL has provided the opportunity to study nuclear matter under extreme condition. The large amount of data collected since RHIC began operation in 2000 has allowed us to study the medium produced in great detail. There is now considerable evidence that a new state of matter - known as a Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) - is created in these high energy collisions. We are therefore moving away from the discovery phase and into one where the properties of the QGP are being explored. I will describe how quark flavours, such as strangeness and charm, are being used to probe these properties.
